Week 6: Final Idea

After reviewing all the stimuli in last week’s session, I have decided to choose the Cog Head stimuli for my solo. I chose this one because I was drawn in by the image and how it contrasted, this gave me the idea of contrasting the movements between mechanical and fluid.

I also liked the idea of linking three separate sections together, so the first section being very fluid and natural like the muscles in the image and then the second section representing the sharpness and circular motion of the cogs leading to the final section joining them together so my top half is representing the mechanical side and the bottom half is still very natural and fluid.

Nevertheless, I also thought it would be interesting to create and start some of the movements using the head and shoulders, as the image is a close up of the head and this allows my piece to relate back to the image and the stimuli.

As well as the idea of incorporating memory loss and what happens when the brain doesn’t remember or work as well as what it used to, as this then goes back to the cogs working as hard as possible in a frantic manner and the brain being like a machine.

For music, I want to use a piece that is very contrasting with being mechanic and like a machine to being fluid and like the muscles of the body, as well as when I do a section about the brain not working and the idea of memory loss, I need a piece with a range of dynamics and that allows the audience to understand what is happening and what my piece is about.

With doing a section on memory loss, I will be researching the different stages of memory loss and the short- and long-term causes of memory loss, so I am able to understand what context I am putting into my solo and that it makes sense within the piece.

I am really looking forward to creating my solo, and challenging myself, as this is never something I have done before especially contrasting between two dynamics throughout the piece and then combining these to portray the idea that the human body is a machine and when that machine stops working, everything is gone and all the memories that have been built over the years are also gone.
This is the Stimulus I will be using for my solo.

  1. I really like your idea of using the head and shoulders to instigate the movements and is an interesting take on the image and topic you have created. How do you plan on showing the stages of memory loss in your choreography?

    1. Thankyou! For the memory loss idea I plan on using a variety of choreographic devices such as accumulation, retrograde and repetition throughout the piece as this portrays my idea well.

  2. You have thought carefully about different dynamics that you can include in your piece and I think the fact that they are juxtaposing qualities will make your piece very interesting. What choreographic devices would you like to include in your piece?

  3. I think that your final piece idea is very strong and interesting. I like the fact that you have included what you would like to incorporate in your piece to make it more dynamic and strong. I just wondered what choreographic devices and techniques you would like to include when choreographing?

  4. You have given a clear structure to your post, stating what you hope to achieve and how you would like to structure your final idea. You have included some interesting points explaining what you hope to find within your music, have you successfully found a piece of music that will portray this? I like your idea of showing how the brain works together, like a machine, as well as the idea of memory loss, portraying how this then has an impact on the brain. How will you demonstrate this idea through movement within your piece? What Choreographic devices/ creative processes/ emotions might you include and why? How will you ensure your idea successfully comes across to the audience?

    1. Thankyou! In my piece I want to use the choreographic devices of accumulation, repetition and retrograde. To portray the idea of memory loss I am going to be using one section and repeating this a few times in my piece however, changing the directions, order or even missing out a few steps to show the idea of forgetting daily routines and how this becomes more severe over time.
