Half Term: Critical Review of Dance Piece #1

Image
This is an image from the duet section of Infra by Wayne McGregor, performed by The Royal Ballet in 2008. In my blog today, I am going to be reviewing Wayne McGregor’s piece Infra, this piece was first performed in 2008 with the company of The Royal Ballet, a piece about a moving mediation on human interactions. As the full piece is thirty minutes, there are many different sections so I am going to be reviewing the duet section, performed by a male and female dancer. After watching the piece, the first time, you can see how the classical ballet movements had been adapted to challenge the dancers physically as well challenging the idea of classical ballet and how it should be performed in a production. I really like the elements of pas de deux in the piece but again how it has been adapted so it’s not placed and technical like classical ballet, it uses a lot of body movements and they stay connected throughout. I also like how the female dancer is on pointe bec...

Week 6: Final Idea

Image
After reviewing all the stimuli in last week’s session, I have decided to choose the Cog Head stimuli for my solo. I chose this one because I was drawn in by the image and how it contrasted, this gave me the idea of contrasting the movements between mechanical and fluid.  I also liked the idea of linking three separate sections together, so the first section being very fluid and natural like the muscles in the image and then the second section representing the sharpness and circular motion of the cogs leading to the final section joining them together so my top half is representing the mechanical side and the bottom half is still very natural and fluid. Nevertheless, I also thought it would be interesting to create and start some of the movements using the head and shoulders, as the image is a close up of the head and this allows my piece to relate back to the image and the stimuli.  As well as the idea of incorporating memory loss and what happens when the brain ...

Week 5: Stimuli

In today’s session, we got into pairs and reviewed and looked at the stimuli for our solos, there were eight images around the studio and we had to write down what we thought these images meant and possible ideas that came to mind when we looked at them. The first image I viewed was one of the Human images, this imaged reminded me of diffusion as the outline of the human was fading out into different shapes, a lot of these were circular which would allow lots of circular movements and rotation in the dance.  The next image we viewed was also a Human image, this one however was a lot more emotive; it was a close up on one person with smudges that could represent tears, or memory loss and possibly incorporate the idea of losing someone close. The use of isolation also came to mind with this image as it is only one person. Next we looked at the Landscape image, this was a very dark image and the surroundings were broken and falling down. Also, the idea of the light at the...

Week 4: Creative Tasks

Over the past few sessions of choreography, I have really enjoyed being able to come up with different pieces all from different motifs, as creating my own pieces of choreography was never something I have been fully confident with and now I have been able to create several pieces and perform them.  When I start a new piece, I always find it difficult knowing where to start, ensuring I am using new steps and movements, so that all my pieces are different and unique to one another. I overcome this, by reviewing my previous videos of choreography and ensuring I can improve my work and develop my use of choreographic devices and movements.  In week one we started off only using our arms to write our name to create movement, this then developed into using different body parts, this allowed the piece to flow and run smoothly. I liked this because it helped with knowing where to start and then gave me more ideas as the piece went on. I also liked creating the phone number p...
