Week 3: ‘In Countenance of Kings’ by Justin Peck

In today’s session we watched two of Justin Peck’s videos one was about his choreographic process, which inspired our motifs for our solo and we also watched his piece, “In The Countenance Of Kings”. This was a very interesting piece formed with balletic and elegant steps however performed very strong and dynamic which is very contrasting towards one another.  The piece portrayed the idea of freedom, as the dancers were wearing trainers, their hair was down and overall the steps and arm movements were very free however, again this is contrasted as the large cast creates a chaotic and unorganised scene with all the dancers, patterns and formations. When watching the piece, it seems that the time signature is slightly off again representing the idea of freedom. In my opinion, the piece is about the girl realising her inner strength, this comes with reflecting on her past for the motivation and determination, as well as believing in herself and coming to terms with the fact s...

Week 3: Key Practitioner Lesson

Image
The photo is all of the shapes we though of individually and we then used this as our motif. In today’s session we watched a selection of Justin Peck’s videos, this included a video on his choreographic process. As a class, we used this to create a motif, we all drew a different shape on a blank piece of paper, from this we then had to create movements including at least five of the shapes. The movements could vary from imagining to be a shape with the movements or imagining the shape was in front of you and having to move around it in different ways. In my piece, I tried to incorporate as many shapes as I could as well as thinking of unique ways to move around each shape and to make the movements come across to the audience clear. I also used the sheet of paper with everyone’s drawings on like a map, so using one shape to travel to the next shape, then my movements ran more smoothly and I was able to have a good motif to create my piece. I really liked this task b...

Week 2: Choreographic Devices

This is a clip of mine and Sadie's duet, with the choreographic devices. In today’s session we combined our choreography from last week with another member of the group, once we had taught each other one of our sections, we then joined them together, ensuring the piece ran smoothly and looked like one dance, instead of two separate pieces. After this, we were then given a list of choreographic devices and incorporated four into our section, myself and Sadie decided to add: unison, meaning we were both in time with each other, we also chose contrast and this was a movement which was noticeably different from anything we had done so far in the dance, we also added reverse where we performed a sequence in reverse  and finally repetition, which was used throughout our piece. Once we had finished our piece, we performed them for the class to see if they could tell  what choreographic devices we had used in our piece, I liked this because we got to see ev...

Week 1: Introduction to Choreography

In our first session of choreography, we began the class with improvisation starting on the floor with small movements and as the music built up our movements gradually became bigger and I was able to use the space more and feel more confident, as improvisation isn't something I have done on a regular basis and starting on the floor and building up allowed me to become more creative and inspired by the movements and the music. From this I learnt, when dancing on the floor there wasn't as much effort in as when I was at my full height and dancing to my best ability. After our improvisation task, we wrote our name in front of us with our finger and then used different body parts for each letter, for example the letter M, I used my knees and for the letter E, I used my elbow, we then had to think of an adjective, mine was excited, meaning my movements needed to be dynamic and sharp. I liked this task because it was an easy way to create movement, just as something as simple...
