Week 3: Key Practitioner Lesson



The photo is all of the shapes we though of individually and we then used this as our motif.


In today’s session we watched a selection of Justin Peck’s videos, this included a video on his choreographic process. As a class, we used this to create a motif, we all drew a different shape on a blank piece of paper, from this we then had to create movements including at least five of the shapes. The movements could vary from imagining to be a shape with the movements or imagining the shape was in front of you and having to move around it in different ways.

In my piece, I tried to incorporate as many shapes as I could as well as thinking of unique ways to move around each shape and to make the movements come across to the audience clear. I also used the sheet of paper with everyone’s drawings on like a map, so using one shape to travel to the next shape, then my movements ran more smoothly and I was able to have a good motif to create my piece.

I really liked this task because it was something I had never thought about before and it was interesting to also see how everyone in the class had incorporated each shape into their piece. I also liked experimenting with different steps to see if it would flow with the routine and portray the shape I was trying to create.

At first, I found it difficult to think of steps, especially for the simple shapes like a square or a triangle but then even the idea of using the arms to create embellishment and then developing this further into a body ripple or a movement was really fun to create. However, I liked using the shapes with lots of swirls as this encouraged lots of turns and arm movements within my piece.

  1. You did really well to think of so many movements for different shapes, and I liked how they were all different levels. You thought of unique ways to transition from one shape to another which is perfect for your choreography in the future. What decision led you to repeat the grand battement to second? For future choreography ,maybe try connecting with the audience with eye contact as I understand your concentrating on the movements which you portrayed very well.

    1. I would agree with connecting more with the audience with eye contact in my choreography, this is something I am working on. I decided to repeat the grand battement to second as I felt this was a highlight in my piece and added a range of dynamics to it aswell. Thankyou for your comment

  2. I agree with Lucy with engaging with the audience to draw them into the piece, I know this is hard as it is something I struggle with. I liked your use of turns at different heights and you used the space to its full potential.

  3. I like your use of different levels in your dance. It makes your choreography very interesting to watch. Would you include Justin Peck's choreographic technique in your own work in the future?

    1. Thankyou! Yes I would really like to incorporate this technique with future pieces, as I feel you can challenge yourself so much with this and when choreographing you never know what the outcome will be.

  4. I liked the piece you produced here and you look very comfortable doing the flowing shapes and turns. But if you did it again how could you challenge yourself and make a piece with contrasting dynamics?

    1. Thankyou! If I was to choreograph this piece again I would use a range of fast and slow dynamics in order for the piece to look more interesting and the bigger movements to look more explosive and dynamic.

Yes I found that I really enjoyed this task as it challenged me to think of new and interesting ways to move and at the start of the lesson I didn’t know what the outcome of the piece would be. The practitioner related to the creative task as Justin Peck draws out shapes before starting his piece and uses this as a map or a guide to create the final production with his dancers.
