Week 12: Final Performance Evaluation

In this week’s blog, I am going to be talking about how my final performance of my solo went. Overall, I felt this was the best I had ever performed my solo and believed that I came across as confident to the panel. Over the past few weeks of creating my solo, I have used a variety of different creative processes as well as choreographic devices, inspired by my chosen practitioner, Wayne McGregor. My solo was based on the stimulus of the ‘Cog Head’ and I thought of the idea of incorporating memory loss in my piece, this led to me doing a lot of research into memory loss as well as into my chosen practitioner, Wayne McGregor.

The first week of choreographing, I found it really difficult to think of new movements as well as ensuring I wasn’t constantly repeating myself, so I used the creative process of improvisation, to help me pick out key movements. Improvisation was something I wasn’t very confident with at the start of the term and this was then so important when creating my piece and allowed me to connect to the music more and have much more emotion to it.

I also used the creative process of physical thinking, inspired by Wayne McGregor, and imagined the cogs were the object and I then used different body parts to move round the object, this allowed my piece to be much more creative as well as unique.

The last section of my piece was really challenging to create and I found it very difficult as it was a lot of sections in my piece into one big section however, performed in different orders, different levels and different directions to portray the idea of memory loss. To overcome this, I again used improvisation as well as trial and error, to see what combinations looked well together and linked as one movement.

If I was to perform my piece again on a stage, I would use lighting in my piece to make it look more professional. I would like the lighting to be complete darkness with one spotlight, as this allows the audience to focus on the movement happening and not what is going on around the solo.

I have really enjoyed being able to create my own piece, as this is something I had never really done before, I have found it rewarding to be able to challenge myself  with new movements as well as creative processes and choreographic devices.
