Week 5: Stimuli

In today’s session, we got into pairs and reviewed and looked at the stimuli for our solos, there were eight images around the studio and we had to write down what we thought these images meant and possible ideas that came to mind when we looked at them.

The first image I viewed was one of the Human images, this imaged reminded me of diffusion as the outline of the human was fading out into different shapes, a lot of these were circular which would allow lots of circular movements and rotation in the dance.

The next image we viewed was also a Human image, this one however was a lot more emotive; it was a close up on one person with smudges that could represent tears, or memory loss and possibly incorporate the idea of losing someone close. The use of isolation also came to mind with this image as it is only one person.

Next we looked at the Landscape image, this was a very dark image and the surroundings were broken and falling down. Also, the idea of the light at the end of the tunnel, as there seems to be a never-ending road however, in the distance you can see a brighter light.

The Camera Life image was the next photograph we looked at and I liked the idea of using stillness within the movements, like when your waiting for the photo to be taken. Also, the use of dynamics that are very sudden and sharp to represent the camera flash.

Next was the Child Gun image, this image contrasted the innocence of the young girls in the image with the violence of the guns. In the image you can also see the sadness on the girls faces, like they didn’t want to be there.

The Cog Head image was next, this one was my personal favourite and I will be using this one for my solo, this is because I really liked the idea of the contrast between the natural structure of the head and then the mechanical side to it, as this allows the movements to be robotic, sharp and angular however also very natural with fluid movements. I also like the idea of circular movements and the use of rotation to represents the cogs and the ridges can be represented by the sharpness of the movements. Nevertheless, the movements can all be linked like the muscles as well as the cogs, which means my solo will always be moving and the idea of the movements come from the head and the head and shoulders.

Data was the next image I looked at, when looking at it the use of repetition came to mind and the use of all the movements being connected like the data was in the image. Also, again the idea of the Zodiac signs as it looked like the stars.

Finally, the last image we viewed was the pollution image, I found this one the hardest to think of ideas however, the buildings and smoke being so high conveyed the idea of being trapped and the use of contrast with soft and heavy movements.

  1. I really like the fact you have explored each of the eight stimuli. You have also discussed the ideas you have towards each stimulus and the movement you would include. I feel like you should of chosen 3 stimuli to go into further detail rather than all of them; however, i love the fact you have explored all of them. Do you know which one you were more drawn towards?

    1. Thankyou! I wanted to discuss all my points but I would agree with being able to going into more detail with my favourite ones. The Cog Head stimuli is the stimuli I am drawn to the most.

  2. I agree with Abi's previous comment: I like way you have made comments on all of the stimuli. However you have gone into more detail on the one you were drawn to the most. What other way could your interpret the cog head image?

    1. Thankyou! Another idea I had was memory loss and the stages of this, this is something I am researching into and really want to incorporate in my piece.

  3. id the use of group discussion have an impact on your thoughts? What other ideas and interpretations were discussed during the lesson? Reflecting back, what drew you away from the other options and towards the 'Cog Head' stimuli?

    1. Yes the group discussion really helped, as it allowed me to see how other people had interpreted the stimuli. An idea that was discussed in class about the ‘Camera Life’ stimulus was about portraying fake emotions in photos which I found really interesting. Personally, I was drawn to the ‘Cog Head’ stimulus because I had the most ideas aswell as mucus ideas for this stimulus.
