Week 4: Creative Tasks

Over the past few sessions of choreography, I have really enjoyed being able to come up with different pieces all from different motifs, as creating my own pieces of choreography was never something I have been fully confident with and now I have been able to create several pieces and perform them.

When I start a new piece, I always find it difficult knowing where to start, ensuring I am using new steps and movements, so that all my pieces are different and unique to one another. I overcome this, by reviewing my previous videos of choreography and ensuring I can improve my work and develop my use of choreographic devices and movements.

In week one we started off only using our arms to write our name to create movement, this then developed into using different body parts, this allowed the piece to flow and run smoothly. I liked this because it helped with knowing where to start and then gave me more ideas as the piece went on. I also liked creating the phone number piece because we had a starting point with each number being a movement, but this still allowed us to be creative with how we performed this with levels, dynamics and directions. When performing this for an audience, it needed to be able to flow and not look like movements just put together because that was what the number said.

In week two we started our Zodiac Sign pieces, I found this difficult because we had to use the words on the paper to create movements especially words like: lonely, cute and suspicious as I didn’t know what movements would represent these well. This was also difficult as it had to be portrayed across to the audience, and those words needed to come across as I performed my piece.

During week three we used shapes to mimic and create movements, I really enjoyed this as we could interpret anyway, we wanted and it was interesting to see how everyone used the shapes and layout of the piece of paper but everyone’s solo was so unique and different to each other.

Finally, in week four, we did an improvisation task of moving like a raindrop, so this varied from small movements to very sharp and dynamic movements. I found this really useful for choreography and different ideas as well as challenging because you had to act and dance as a raindrop.

  1. I really like your blog and the layout you have done. You have gone into a lot of detail about the creative tasks, i feel as tough you could explore the final task of raindrops in more detail to widen the aspects of your blog. I love the fact you have included your own opinions in the shape improvisation.
what were your strengths and weaknesses doing these tasks?

    1. Thankyou! Personally I found the raindrop task very challenging, as it was hard to think of different movements for a raindrop and how to move in that way however, as we got further into this task I found it easier to think of ways to move and the movements became more fluid.

  2. I really like how clearly presented your blog and I like how you mention what you found difficult in certain creative tasks too. Maybe go into a little more depth in them and give an example from one of the phrases?

    1. Thankyou! The raindrop task I found really challenging to start off with especially thinking of different ways to move with different body parts but throughout the lesson this became more fluid and easier.

  3. Looking back at your reflective notes on each creative exercise, think about; what did you find easy or difficult, was your movement readable to your audience, have these processes allowed you to form your own ideas for your own creative processes to create movement? If so, what are your new ideas?
Reflecting back to the task, please go into detail discussing what we did during the lesson, your thoughts towards the video’s we watched, how the creative task (rain concept) related to the practitioner, etc.

    1. In the first few sessions of choreography, I didn’t feel as confident with improvising and I feel I have improved on this massively throughout the past sessions. I really have enjoyed using choreographic devices in my pieces as I have found it to make my work a lot more creative as well as interesting. I feel these processes have made it a lot more easier to create movement as I’m no longer repeating the same movements and I’m able to think of new and much lore interesting movements. I found the rain improvisation very challenging at first as I wasn’t sure what movements to include.
