Week 2: Choreographic Devices
This is a clip of mine and Sadie's duet, with the choreographic devices.
In today’s session we combined our choreography from last week with another member of the group, once we had taught each other one of our sections, we then joined them together, ensuring the piece ran smoothly and looked like one dance, instead of two separate pieces.
After this, we were then given a list of choreographic devices and incorporated four into our section, myself and Sadie decided to add: unison, meaning we were both in time with each other, we also chose contrast and this was a movement which was noticeably different from anything we had done so far in the dance, we also added reverse where we performed a sequence in reverse and finally repetition, which was used throughout our piece.
Once we had finished our piece, we performed them for the class to see if they could tell
what choreographic devices we had used in our piece, I liked this because we got to see everyone’s pieces, as well as getting feedback on whenever our choreographic devices were noticeable.
This is a clip of my solo with the choreographic devices.
After we had all performed our duets, we started a new task which involved basing the whole piece around your Zodiac Sign, my sign is Capricorn and for the strengths I had the following words: excellent, intelligent, practical, reliable, perseverant, generous, optimistic, cute, persistent and for weaknesses I had the words: stubborn, lonely and suspicious.
My solo needed to be based around these words as well as using the choreographic devices, we spoke about earlier in the lesson, this ensured the movements were more personal, as well as making my piece more interesting. In my solo, I added the choreographic devices of: contrast, embellishment, repetition and highlight, these extended my piece and again made the sections more unique.
I liked using the choreographic devices because I hadn’t heard of most of them and it was good to try and incorporate different choreographic devices into each section of my final piece.
This is not a bad start to your week 2 post!
ReplyDeletePlease title as Week 2- Choreographic Devices
Please think about the following points:
- More detail on the various choreographic devices we looked at during class is needed (you could insert photos of the hand-out to illustrate this).
- What is the purpose of integrating choreographic devices and the exercise set in class?
- How did the integration of four choreographic devices affect your final phrase of movement?
- Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
- Were you successful with the task set?
- Which choreographic devices did you use and why?
I like your reflective paragraph on how you performed you pieces in front of the class allowing you to get feedback and understand the impact of choreographic devices by looking at other people’s phrases.
What you have written about your zodiac task is good however I would like you be more reflective in your writing.
Think about:
What movements did you use to portray certain qualities/ emotions?
Do you think the purpose of the movement successfully came across to the audience?
How did you find this creative task? Interesting? Easy? Difficult? Why?
How did the allowance of more time affect the final product of your phrase?
Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
What chorographic devices did you integrate and how/ why?
Were you successful with the task set? Was it readable to the audience?
Thank you for linking your videos in your writing, as a reader this has shown a clear connection between your writing and your videos!

Thankyou! I found incorporating the choreographic devices into my piece really challenging at first as some I had never heard of before but I enjoyed being able to use a variety of different choreographic devices to challenge myself. I feel the use of the choreographic devices helped improve and challenge my piece more as it made it a lot more interesting and unique. I found my strengths to be that me and Sadie worked well together and were able to feed off each other’s ideas. Our duet was able to incorporate: unison, contrast, reverse and repetition these choreographic devices worked well with our piece. For my zodiac sign piece one of the negative words was lonely, so I used a lot of floor work and down movements so these could come across well to the audience and this allowed me to show the different emotions in my piece. I found this creative task to be really interesting as well as difficult because at the start I found it really challenging to create a solo from a selection of contrasting emotions and adjectives. In my piece, I added the choreographic devices of: contrast, embellishment, repetition and highlight, I used these as I felt they worked well with the words I was given. Overall, I found this task to be successful and when performing I felt it came across well to the audience.
DeleteI can really see the emotions of your zodiac sign within your solo. Which word of the strengths and weaknesses of Capricorn was the hardest to portray within your phrase? Which was the easiest?
ReplyDeleteThankyou! I found optimistic and practical to be the easiest to portray as these allowed me to be creative and challenge myself with my choreography. However, I found intelligent and stubborn to be hard to portray as I wasn’t too sure what movements to use for these.
DeleteI feel you have made clear and relevant points within your blog relating to the tasks.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your solo based around your zodiac sign as I feel your movements relate to your listed qualities well, I can also clearly see the choreographic devices you have included within your piece.
what do you feel your strengths and weaknesses were within these tasks ?
overall I really enjoyed watching your solo performance and duet and reading your points about these tasks.
Thankyou! I found my weakness to be thinking of new and creative movements especially with the zodiac sign piece but in my diet piece, I felt me and Sadie worked really well together and give each other a lot of different ideas.
DeleteYour collaborative piece was really effective and a pleasure to watch, however I wondered whether you chose to use your name or number piece and also what you thought the strengths were within the piece?
ReplyDeleteThankyou! I chose to do my name as i felt this was more creative and interesting than my number piece. For this task I felt me and Sadie were able to work really well together and use a lot of different choreographic devices in our piece.
DeleteThe layout of your blog is very clear. I like the way you have mentioned which zodiac signs you used. Could you mention what movements you included to portray your zodiac sign?
ReplyDeleteThankyou! For the word lonely I used a lot of floor work to portray the idea of isolation and then for optimistic and practical I used a lot of turns and jumps.
Deletei like how you used videos to further explain your process this week, they also showed us clearly how you developed you choreography using the choreographic devices. However, how did the choreographic devices change the feeling/perspective if the piece?
ReplyDeleteThankyou! I felt the choreographic devices made the piece look more interesting and unique as there was different elements and dynamics once the choreographic devices were added and overall this helped improved my piece.
DeleteYour choreographic devices within your piece were used well and very clear.
ReplyDeleteIf you were to pick 2 other choreographic devices to enhance your piece, what would you choose, how would you use them and why?
Thankyou! If I had to choose two more choreographic devices I would choose complementary and retrograde as I feel these would work well with my piece and would be able to challenge me.
