Week 10: Studio Performance

This is a short clip of the opening section of my solo.

In this weeks session I did my studio performance of my solo for my assessment piece. At the start of the lesson, I felt nervous about performing my solo however, overall I felt my performance went well and I was able to remember all of my movements I had choreographed in the three previous lessons.

After performing my solo for the studio performance, I felt that I had achieved the three learning outcomes as my brief represents my chosen stimulus of the Cog Head, I was also very happy that I had included all the choreographic devices I wanted to in my piece and this came across well to the audience, especially: accumulation, retrograde and repetition as I felt this were the most important yet the most challenging choreographic devices in my piece. I also felt my research about memory loss and about my chosen practitioner, Wayne McGregor, really helped with the story telling of the piece and I helped develop my ideas and movements in my solo.

When watching back the video of my solo, I realised there were some smaller details that needed fixing, for example always ensuring that I am really low and down in all of my plies, as well as making sure I always finish off every single movement instead of rising into the next movement.

I performed my solo for my teacher as well as some of my peers. Miss Norman gave me feedback after my solo, which I found really useful and helpful especially for the final performance. My feedback was that the contrast in the piece was very effective and worked well with the piece but I needed to work on not anticipating the next movement and ensuring that the mechanical movements were sharper and more dynamic, so the audience can really see the difference. I was also told to keep my eye line up throughout my piece, as sometimes I tend to look down and this makes me look less confident when performing.

I feel the application of feedback has really helped and improved my piece as it allows the story and message of the piece to come across to the audience and shows the use of dynamics and choreographic devices as well.

In my final piece, I will keep engaged with the audience throughout my piece as well as keeping the energy levels high throughout especially on the sharp and dynamic movements so the audience can really see the contrast between the two.

  1. this is a great blog Megan and I love how you have included a video of your choreography within this.
You have clearly discussed the learning outcomes from this task and how by performing you choreography full out in the studio and receiving feedback has helped you in a positive way.
How will you include you feedback into your work to improve your piece as a whole?
Well done I really enjoyed reading this blog. where you have gone into good detail upon your studio performance.

    1. Thankyou for your comment! I will include the feedback in my work by performing my piece with much more stronger dynamics and ensuring I am doing the piece to the best of my ability and really challenging myself.

  2. Thankyou so much for your comment Louisa! I’ve found the feedback I have received very useful as it’s allowed me to perform my piece more so the story I am telling is able to get across to the audience. I’ve not made any major changes but I have been working on the sharp dynamics in my piece and ensuring this comes across clear to the audience.

  3. I really enjoyed reading about your studio performance experience, I'm glad it went well. I also like that your have taken your feedback into account and will act upon it before the assessment. I was wondering whether you have considered the learning outcomes and briefs and whether you have met the criteria for them?

    1. Thankyou! In my piece I feel I have achieved all of the learning outcomes and briefs as my chosen stimulus was Cog Head and I hade done a lot of research about this as well as my chosen practitioner, Wayne McGregor, as well as I have included choreographic devices in my piece.

  4. This is a very clear blog Megan well done! However, you spoke about how smaller movements needed fixing, how did you do this? Also, did you allow more time between each movement allowing you to finish off each movement?

    1. Thankyou! With the smaller movements and details, I want need to really use my plies and use sharper dynamics. Yes I have been working on not anticipating what’s coming next in my piece, so that it is interesting for the audience.

  5. How did the Studio Performance create an impact on your creative process? What impact do you think these changes will have on the piece? How have you applied the feedback that was given to you during the run and what impact has this made on the piece? Also how will you ensure to create the best possible outcome?

This is a well-considered post and I feel you have shown a clear understanding of the topic, I feel the work you have produced so far is possibly around the 2:2 criteria. If you are looking to progress to a 2:1/1:1, it will be worth considering the quality of your reflective skills, research, ability to answer the questions and critical thinking. By demonstrating well-developed critical thinking alongside arguments as well as critically reflecting your process, showing awareness of own strengths and weaknesses and considering possibilities, and their consequences to develop appropriate actions, it will offer new questions for your consideration and may help you identify areas you might not have considered with within your project. Can you ensure you have evidence of these areas within your work.

    1. Thankyou for your comment! The studio performance created a huge impact on my creative processes of improvisation and physical thinking, inspired by my chosen practitioner, Wayne McGregor. The studio performance allowed me to be a lot more confident with my creative processes however, I found when performing I needed to use the whole of the space and possibly start my solo more to the side of the room instead of the centre.
